Soros Donates $102m to Democracy PAC as Democrats Edge Ahead in Midterm Polls

George Soros-linked organisations have given $102 million to Democracy PAC, which has spent nearly $42 million on Senate, House and state races. Democrats now lead Republicans by 11 points among likely voters in one national poll and by 49% to 47% in 37 competitive House districts, despite a fundraising gap.

Billionaire George Soros has donated $102 million ahead of the midterms—and now the Democrats are coming out ahead

George Soros-linked organisations have donated $102 million to Democracy PAC, the political action committee he founded in 2019, as the party seeks to close a fundraising gap with Republicans ahead of the midterm elections. Federal Election Commission records show that roughly half the sum came from Geosor Corp, Soros's private investment company, while the other half came from the Fund for Policy Reform, a nonprofit within his Open Society Foundations network.

Democracy PAC had spent nearly $42 million by the end of June, according to the same filings, directing money to groups active in Senate, House and state-level races. The structure allows Soros-backed funds to flow into organisations that can concentrate spending on the most competitive contests, at a time when Democrats have trailed Republicans in overall fundraising.

The scale of the giving extends a long pattern of nine-figure political donations by Soros, the 96-year-old financier and Holocaust survivor who escaped communist Hungary and built his reputation on Wall Street. He gave Democrats $128 million in the 2022 midterm cycle, making him the largest contributor that year, according to OpenSecrets. Democracy PAC also raised more than $81 million during the 2020 election cycle and nearly $72 million during the 2024 cycle, passing most of the money to Democrat-aligned PACs and independent groups.

This is the first congressional election cycle since Soros transferred control of his political operation to his son Alex in 2023. Alex Soros backed Kamala Harris in 2024 and urged Democrats to unite behind her. His siblings have also given to left-leaning groups: in 2013, Jonathan Soros gave $1 million to the centre-left Friends of Democracy, while Andrea Soros contributed $100,000 to the same PAC, according to FEC records.

Despite the fundraising gap, recent polling suggests Democrats have moved ahead. They held an 11-point advantage over Republicans among likely voters in an Emerson College poll on 24 September. A separate survey by The Cook Political Report found Democrats leading 49% to 47% across 37 competitive House races. Those districts had backed President Donald Trump by an average of five points in 2024, indicating that Democrats have improved their position in some of the places most likely to determine control of the House.

Soros's political giving has also drawn scrutiny from the Trump administration. Last year, Trump accused George and Alex Soros of backing «Violent Protests» and instructed federal prosecutors to prepare to investigate the Open Society Foundations. The organisation called the accusation «outrageous and false».

Soros has been a vocal donor in past presidential elections. In 2004, he gave nearly $24 million to groups opposing former President George W. Bush's re-election and openly campaigned for the Democratic candidate John Kerry, describing it as «the most important election of my lifetime». In 2003, he said he would give up his entire fortune if that would guarantee stopping Bush from winning.

The party's platform tends to align with his philanthropic vision of advancing an «open society» of institutions supporting civil society and the rule of law. Right-wing critics have long cast Soros in conspiracy theories as a puppet master controlling the Democratic Party, a claim he and his organisations reject.
