Electrica Extends Liberty Galați Power Contract, Averting Grid Cutoff
The Liberty Galați steel plant, formerly Sidex, has temporarily avoided disconnection from the electricity grid after Electrica Furnizare agreed to extend its energy supply for several weeks.
The Liberty Galați steel plant, formerly Sidex, has avoided being disconnected from the electricity grid, at least for now. The state-owned company Electrica Furnizare has agreed to extend its electricity supply contract on a short-term basis, averting an interruption of power to one of Romania's largest industrial sites.
According to published information, the extension gives the company a reprieve of several weeks. Liberty Galați's management announced that it reached a last-minute agreement with the supplier after the risk of a power cut had become increasingly imminent. The deal does not, however, resolve the plant's structural problems, but only postpones the point at which the company will have to secure its operating conditions over the longer term.
For a steel plant, electricity is both an essential cost and a condition for continuous operation, since production processes in the steelworks and rolling mill depend on a constant supply. A disconnection would have had direct consequences for production and employees, as well as for the supply chains of which the local steel industry is part.
The situation at Liberty Galați has been followed closely for a long time, in the context of the privatization and changes of ownership the former Sidex has undergone. Questions about the plant's long-term future remain open, and the coming weeks will show whether the parties reach a durable solution for the energy contract.
