Manchester City’s 3-1 Atlético win puts Maresca’s wide attack in focus

Manchester City ended their 2026 Asia Tour with the sort of pre-season result that is useful less for the scoreline than for the pattern behind it. A 3-1 win over Atlético Madrid in Seoul began with City a goal down and ended with Enzo Maresca’s side repeatedly finding decisive moments through players operating from wide and between the lines.

Atlético had taken the lead shortly before half-time. Sixteen-year-old Jorge Domínguez scored in the 43rd minute, giving Diego Simeone’s side a 1-0 advantage and an encouraging moment for one of the youngest players involved in a fixture crowded with established internationals.

City’s response after the break was fast. Omar Marmoush levelled in the 57th minute and scored again two minutes later. Antoine Semenyo supplied both assists, turning a match that had looked awkward for City into a lead before Atlético could reset.

The combination mattered because Semenyo had already been one of the most productive players on the tour. City’s own review of the trip credits him with four assists across the three matches in Hong Kong and South Korea. Maresca also singled out the contribution of his wide players after the game, with Savinho another persistent threat during the evening.

That does not make a summer friendly a tactical verdict on the season ahead. Atlético were also using the game to distribute minutes, integrate recent arrivals and evaluate younger players. Both sides made extensive changes, especially after the interval. But the speed with which City converted two openings into two Marmoush goals is precisely the sort of attacking efficiency coaches want to see at the end of pre-season.

Rayan Aït-Nouri, introduced in the second half, added City’s third in the 90th minute. The late goal gave the result a more comfortable appearance than much of the contest had suggested. Atlético had competed well enough to lead at half-time and later introduced Kang In Lee, the South Korea international newly signed from Paris Saint-Germain.

Kang’s appearance gave the match an additional local dimension. He entered just after the hour for his Atlético debut in his home country and nearly produced an equaliser. Atlético have signed the 25-year-old through June 2031 and given him the number seven shirt, making his Seoul introduction a conspicuous first public moment in red and white.

For City, however, the most immediately relevant question is what happens after the tour. The Atlético match was the last fixture of the club’s Asian programme, which had also taken the team through Hong Kong and an earlier game in Seoul. More than 50,000 people were inside Seoul World Cup Stadium for the finale, evidence that these fixtures are both football preparation and major international events.

The venue itself added some context. Atlético beat City 2-1 at the same stadium in the 2023 Coupang Play Series, when the crowd was reported at 64,165. Three years later, City reversed that result in front of an official attendance of 50,078.

Maresca’s post-match message was deliberately forward-looking. He described the Atlético game as a strong test and made clear that the pre-season phase was now effectively over. City’s next assignment is the Community Shield against Arsenal in Cardiff, where the tolerance for looseness will be much smaller and the relevance of every attacking relationship will be greater.

That is why Semenyo’s influence is the most useful element to take from Seoul. His two assists were not isolated statistical decoration. They decided the key two-minute spell of the match and completed a tour in which he repeatedly created goals for team-mates. Marmoush, meanwhile, showed the benefit of having a forward ready to convert those deliveries before a defence can reorganise.

Aït-Nouri’s goal offered another kind of depth: a substitute arriving late and still affecting the scoreboard. With a long domestic season ahead, the ability to receive production from different areas of the squad will matter as much as any one preferred starting XI.

Atlético can leave with their own positives despite the defeat. Domínguez’s goal gave Simeone another reason to keep a close eye on the teenager, while Kang’s debut supplied the local crowd with the moment many had come hoping to see. Simeone said afterwards that City deserved the victory once they had moved 2-1 ahead, while also stressing the need for his group to continue building cohesion.

For City, the conclusion is narrower but encouraging. The final score was 3-1, yet the stronger signal was the concentration of attacking output around wide service, quick finishing and useful contributions from substitutes. Pre-season cannot answer how well those mechanisms will survive competitive pressure. Seoul showed that they are at least functioning before the first major test arrives.
