The Fever arrive with an 18-10 record and have won eight of their last ten games, while Portland are 11-17 and have lost three in a row. The sides have split their two previous meetings this season, with the home team winning and covering the spread on both occasions.
Indiana's injury report lists guard Caitlin Clark and centre Aliyah Boston as probable for the contest, and the game is one of the headline fixtures on Friday's WNBA schedule, with much of the pre-match build-up centred on whether Clark will be cleared to play. Clark leads the Fever in assists per game and is the team's highest-usage player, while Boston is the third-leading scorer and the leading rebounder. Despite the probable tags, the line hints at uncertainty around their availability: when the Fever visited Portland earlier this season with both players available, they were 11.5-point favourites rather than 7.5.
Clark's personal numbers against the Fire have been erratic. She played in Indiana's 100-84 defeat to Portland and missed the Fever's 90-73 blowout win over the Fire, and her worst performance of the season came in this fixture, when she scored six points on one-of-seven shooting in a season-low 21 minutes and 45 seconds.
Portland, meanwhile, will be without shooting guard Sarah Ashlee Barker. Her absence is considered particularly significant for a team that attempts three-pointers at the third-highest rate in the WNBA. Barker is shooting 50.2 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc, and she holds the Fire's second-highest on/off net rating at plus 7.0.
Friday's game has been branded «Sophie Night» in reference to Indiana backup guard Sophie Cunningham, whose recent comments about transgender athletes in women's sport have stirred controversy. Cunningham was reported to have said that «young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men», a remark that has drawn a response from activists on both sides of the debate. Campaigners connected to the «protect women in sports» movement, and possibly LGBTQ+ activists, are reported to be planning rallies outside the arena in support of, or in opposition to, her comments.
The political attention has not pushed the basketball into the background. A betting preview of the contest argued that Indiana are undervalued at the current number, with Kelsey Mitchell named as a player who tends to be overlooked because of Clark's popularity. Mitchell averages a team-best 23.5 points per game, and her usage would be expected to rise if either Clark or Boston were scratched.
The Fever also appear to hold a decisive edge in the battle for possessions. They post better rebounding rates on both ends of the floor, while Portland have the worst defensive rebounding rate in the WNBA. That advantage is likely to be even more pronounced now that Barker is unavailable.
